An Analysis on the Effect of Music Activities on Reduction of Depression and Change of Self-concept of Children from Multi-cultural Family

Abstract
This research is to examine the effect of music activities on reduction of depression and change of self-concept of children from multi-cultural family. The participants were children from multi-cultural family in the E Global Migrant Workers¡¯ Center located in Seoul. The data of 7 children in an experimental group and 9 children in a control group were analyzed. For this study, Self Concept Inventory and Children¡¯s Depression Inventory were used. After pre-test, the experimental group members participated in 12 music activities, while the control group participants did not do anything. Also, post-test were implemented using the same methods. The results indicated that the experimental group showed positive changes on the self-concepts. Also, there were statistically significant differences between two groups on self-concept of appearance, and with friends, relations with parents. And general self-concept is changed too. Depression scores in the experimental group after music activities were decreased significantly compared to the control group. According to the results, music activities were effective interventions on changing of self-concept and decreasing of depression for children from multi-cultural family.
